University Budget Committee

Committee Update

Update - January 20, 2009

Continuing the information gathering process college deans, campus chancellors and administrative vice presidents have been asked to prepare a 12 percent permanent budget reduction scenario for their areas.

The scenarios are due to be submitted to President Elson S. Floyd and Provost and Executive Vice President Warwick M. Bayly on Feb. 13.

While the actual size and depth of the budget reduction will not be clear until the Legislature’s deliberations are complete, the scenarios will provide further information to Floyd, Bayly and members of the University Budget Committee as they work through the process of preparing a budget for the upcoming biennium.

“Leaders of each college, campus and administrative area are in the best position to determine what their highest-priority programs are and where reductions might be absorbed with the least negative impact on our overall mission,” Bayly said.

He stressed that the university is still planning not simply to make across-the-board cuts to achieve the reduction. But the individual scenarios will provide guidance in making strategic budget decisions.

The University Budget Committee has been meeting to discuss the budget outlook and specific cost-cutting ideas in recent weeks. Bayly said the meetings of the University Budget Committee will resume in mid-February after the 12% reduction scenarios have been received.

Floyd and Bayly led two public budget forums on Jan. 20. To view the archived videostream of the forums please visit Experience WSU.
